Harford County Aegis “Ask A Doctor” – I’ve noticed that some hearing aids cost significantly more than others. Why is this, and are higher-end hearing aids worth the extra investment?

Q: I’ve noticed that some hearing aids cost significantly more than others.  Why is this, and are higher-end hearing aids worth the extra investment?

A: Manufacturers don’t design entry and mid-level hearing aids.  They design the best product they can and then limit its features to create products that can be offered at different price points.  Higher end hearing aids help you hear better in difficult listening situations, such as when multiple people are speaking.  Which level of technology is best for you, depends mostly on your lifestyle and budget.  If you want to hear as well as you can in ALL situations, you get a high-end hearing aid.  But keep in mind that today’s entry-level hearing aids are better than most high-end hearing aids from 6-7 years ago, so you don’t necessarily need to spend a lot for better hearing.
