Harford County Aegis “Ask A Doctor” – I think I need hearing aids, but I’m concerned I won’t like them. I don’t want to spend all that money and end up not wearing them. What can I do?

Q: I think I need hearing aids, but I’m concerned I won’t like them. I don’t want to spend all that money and end up not wearing them. What can I do?

A: That’s a valid (and very common) concern.  First of all, I never tell patients they NEED hearing aids. Your heart will keep beating with or without hearing aids. The real question is: will hearing aids make your life better?  The only way to know that is to actually try them. Most audiologists offer a 30-day return period. We offer 90 days, but even before we talk about purchasing hearing aids, we usually do a demonstration. We’ll program a pair of hearing aids for you, and then you can experience for yourself what it’s like to wear them. If you like ‘em – great! If not – at least now you know.
